Why Are Etsy Tags and Titles Important?
Most sellers know that their Etsy tags and titles are the key to getting their listings found in search.
But how do you go about finding the best keywords to use in your tags and titles when you’re overwhelmed with the research, at a loss for long-tail ideas, or unsure where to start when it comes to your Etsy SEO?
Keep reading, and I’ll guide you through my 4-step process for keyword research, so that you can write your Etsy tags and titles with ease!
Step One: Brainstorm
Before you login to Etsy to write your tags and titles or start typing in keyword ideas into eRank or Marmalead, take a good look at your product and make a list of all the possible keywords that potential customers might use to find it.
Be sure to include as many keyword ideas as you can! The more the better.
If you’re at a loss, think about the following questions:
- What is your product exactly?
- Where might it be used?
- Who might like it or purchase it?
- Why they might like or purchase it?
- How it will be used?
Step Two: Validate
Having a long list of keyword ideas is pointless unless you know that real customers actually use those words and phrases to find what they want in Etsy search.
To validate your ideas, take your list of possible keywords, and type them into the Etsy search bar.
If the words appear in the auto-complete, keep them! If they don’t, you may want to reconsider using them in your Etsy tags and titles.
If you are unsure that a keyword actually describes your item, search using that keyword on Etsy to see if items like yours appear in the results. The last thing you want is to end up in search results that don’t truly describe your item!
Step Three: Research
With your validated keyword ideas in hand, head over to eRank and find the keyword tool.
Use this tool to research each keyword’s
- Etsy search level
- Long-Tail Verification
You’ll want to pay particular attention to keywords that have green indicators for the factors listed above while avoiding keywords that have several red indicators.
Chances are, you won’t find perfect keywords. Please don’t worry or stress about this. If you follow the steps in this strategy, you’ll get the best keywords you possibly can to write your tags and titles.
Pro-Tip: If you have eRank Pro, be sure to use the bulk keyword tool to complete this step.
Step Four: Rank
Now that you’ve completed the research on eRank, you should generally know which keywords are better than others.
Organize a list, starting with your best at the top. These are the keywords you will use to write your tags and titles.
Write Your Etsy Tags and Titles
Writing your tags and titles should be simple now.
How to Write Your Etsy Title
For your listing title, create a list of your top 3-4 keywords, and separate them with commas. Try to put your most specific keyword at the beginning of the title, so your customers know exactly what they are looking at when they view your listing on their phones.

How to Choose Etsy Tags
And now that you have a list of your best keywords, choosing your Etsy tags should be a lot easier as well.
Simply list your keyword phrases in your tags!
You can separate the phrases into more than one tag if they are too long, but do not change the word order.
